The birth of cable protection
Commercially available shower hose
Water meets electrics
MAN required support for developing a protection solution that would enable vehicles to drive through deep water.
The German army had commissioned MAN with the development of a vehicle (Cat. I) capable of driving through water with a depth of 120 cm. As the electrical system in the vehicle had not previously been protected, corrosion problems arose when driving through water.
From the shower hose to cable protection
Despite being used for another purpose, Schlemmer’s then commercially available shower hoses were used to protect the electrical system of the vehicle prototype from water.
Thanks to a fortunate meeting between Adolf König, the managing director of the wholesaler Josef Schlemmer GmbH then specialising in sanitary products, and the MAN engineer Emil Knobloch, a solution to the corrosion problems was found: Schlemmer’s commercially available shower hoses were used to protect the electrical system the vehicle prototype from water.
Thanks to an orientation towards problem solving and the ability of its employees to think outside the box, Schlemmer was able to find a simple yet elegant solution.
Spontaneously to the core business
This was the birth of the cable protection that is still being produced and distributed worldwide by Schlemmer, albeit in a much more sophisticated form. In addition, Schlemmer’s transformation from a sanitary wholesaler to an innovative automotive supplier also began.
