We are Dakar champions! The sensational success of the KTM Factory Racing Team
Munich, 16 January 2017 - Sam Sunderland sprints to Buenos Aires for the overall victory!
After having already been a sponsor of an individual driver in the Dakar Rally last year, Schlemmer was the sponsoring partner of an entire team at this year's edition of the toughest off-road race in the world for the first time: The KTM Factory Racing Team.
A total of four riders lined up for the KTM Factory Team in the motorcycle category. In addition to the top favourite and last year's winner Toby Price from Australia, the Briton Sam Sunderland, the Austrian Matthias Walkner as well as the only woman in the team, the Spaniard Laia Sanz, faced the challenges of the almost 9,000 km long track. In 2017, this traversed three countries in South America for the first time: Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia.
Sam Sunderland and Matthias Walkner were particularly impressive thanks to their clever navigation and strong driving performances. The former even succeeded in placing himself at the top of the overall ranking at the half-way-stage of the rally on the sixth day. Sunderland maintained this lead until the final day when he was crowned the winner of this year's rally. He crossed the finish line in Buenos Aires as the sixth of the final stage with a total lead of 32 minutes over his team colleague Walkner.
The Austrian also put in an outstanding performance on his motorcycle and gave our sponsoring partner KTM double victory at the toughest motor sport event in the world. The Spaniard Laia Sanz scored a respectable 16th place in the final ranking on her motorcycle. This makes the 2017 Dakar Rally a resounding success for Schlemmer and the KTM Factory Team.
The Schlemmer Group congratulates the entire KTM team on this fantastic result and is delighted to have been part of this extraordinary event!
